New newspaper gems

Like many people this week I visited FindMyPast to learn more about digitisation work to put online the Trinity Mirror newspaper archive. This project will see over 100 plus new regional titles available via The British Newspaper Archive and Findmypast. Early publications already released may be great news if you have Midlands relatives: Birmingham Daily Gazette [1862-1956], Birmingham Daily Post [1857-1972] and Daily Herald [1911-1961].

Amongst Findmypast’s webinars this one with Michala Hulme, a social historian at Manchester Metropolitan University, also reminds us of wider sources that can enrich our understanding of ancestors’ lives. The webinar is around an hour long and includes plenty of tips from Michala, for example, a reminder to search newspapers by an ancestor’s address as well as by name.
